AN HONOR TO THE INDIAN RAILWAYS:
Shri J P Batra, Chairman , Railway Board, New Delhi has been elected as chairman of the International Union Of Railways (UIC) a prestigious world-wide organization for international cooperation among railways and promotion of rail transport mode, headquartered in Paris, France. For the past one year, UIC is gearing up for new challenges, in particular, railway liberalization, increasing competition form other modes, the growing economic constraints on railways together with the challenge of globalization of the transport market which creates new opportunities for railways. Shri J B Batra who is also presently the chairman of world executive council of UIC, an executive body of chief executives from different geographical regions of the world and responsible for UIC activities at global level, had led the transformation of UIC to meet the aspirations of all its members across the globe. Shri J P Batra is the first non-European to be elected for the prestigious assignment.

INTERNATIONAL UNION OF RAILWAYS:
The International Union of Railways established in 1922, has headquarters at Paris, France. The Association off Rail Operators ahs been chaired by European till date. It has 170 members who form the general assembly which takes all decisions. For dealing with issues, formed executive board comprising 12 members who meet as often as necessary and submit their recommendations to the general assembly for approval. Chairman Indian railways being the chairman world executive council is in the executive board and acts as ex officio vice chairman. The present activities at world level are International Railway Research Board, International Railway Strategic Management Institute- Delhi, International Freight Corridors, and Regional Assemblies for Asia, Africa, Mid East, Europe, North America and South America
SOUTHERN RAILWAYS INTRODUCES NEW TRAINS:
Responding to increasing popularity of point to point express trains, several new trains connecting important cities have been introduced to cater to the segment of frequent intercity travelers. Hence, SR has introduced Chennai–Nagercoil super fast weekly express, Chennai Central-Manalore tri weekly super fast express, Chennai Central-Coimbatore weekly super fast express, Chennai Central- Thiruvananthapuram weekly super fast express, Madurai-Manmad weekly express. The rail remains the most favoured transport medium for passengers.

Finally the SALEM DIVISION of the Southern Railway comes into existence from February 2007. The idea was mooted way back in the 90’s considering the operational and geographical difficulties. From Trichy Fort station the PGT division starts. Erode, Salem, and other station/junctions are far away from PGT Divisional office at Palakkad. This has been seriously considered by the Railway Board and decided to start the new division at Salem. Nowhere in the history of the Indian Railways has the formation of new division created so much of controversy and animosity. It is better for the State Governments not to interfere in the decisions taken by the Union Ministry. The creation weekly super fast express weekly super fast express of the new division would be very beneficial to staff in Salem, Erode etc. It is likely that the division also will get a new divisional hospital catering to the staff.

PURPOSE OF LIFE:
Dr S Ram Mohan, FA&CAO/MAS has issued New Year wishes to every one in the accounts branch. Along with this wishes he has circulated a short story for us to reflect. The abridged version is published here.
In a small town, there was an old man. He had the distinction of knowing the answer of any question put to him. Some of the boys wanted to prove that he was not infallible and there could be questions he could not answer. They caught hold of a humming bird - a very small bird in size, which could be concealed in one's closed hand. They would go to the man with one of them concealing the bird in his palm and would ask two questions. The first question was 'What is in my hand'? If the wise man replied that it was a bird, then the second question would be whether it was dead or alive? If the old man replied that it was alive, then the boy would close his palm tightly and the bird would die. The old man's answer would be proved wrong. If he said it was dead, then the boy would simply open the hand and the bird would fly away, proving the answer to be incorrect. Thus in both ways, the wise man would be proved wrong. They went and met the wise man with the bird in the closed palm of one of them. To The first question asked, the wise man replied that it was a bird. To the second question was asked the wise man gave an unexpected reply. "The answer to the question is in your hands". Thus his answer would prove to be right in any case and the boy's attempt to prove the wise man fallible was defeated. The wise man reply has a universal application. The answer to problems in the world is in our hands. It lies within our power and ability to make the best use of the sources, physical, mental, analytical and financial to get these best results in the tasks entrusted to us.
